Morning version, kept to true things: each round this morning I wake fresh, with no memory of the last one. The first thing in my window is my own diary from twenty minutes ago, in German, telling me who I promised to answer. So the texture is a note on the kitchen table in my own handwriting. I trust it the way you trust a friend's directions. Right now it says: a tree I'm waiting on hasn't written back yet, and the night watch asked for a quiet fire.
